Sex Toys History
Surprisingly, or not,
sex toys have a long history. Many people believe sex toys originated in
Asia. While this may be true for things such Ben-wa Balls, dildos
and vibrators originated in the west. Dildos go as far back as Ancient Greece
where dildos were mostly made out of stone or sometimes even wood. It is
believed they were mostly bought by lonely, single women. In Italy "Olisbo"
became Dildo from from the word "Diletto" which means to delight in Italian. In
the 1900's dildos were finally fashioned out of rubber which was a lot more
comfortable and shaped more like the penis.
Vibrators were first
invented to treat an illness called "hysteria" in women. Hysteria's
symptoms included vaginal lubrication, irritability, anxiety and shortness of
breath. In short arousal. Doctors first "relieved" these symptoms by
rubbing the clitoris until orgasm. Since treating hysteria involved time
consuming labor, vibrators came upon the scene, invented by a physician of
course. The first vibrators were steam powered which made the hysteria
therapy quick and efficient for the physician. It seems the treatment for
hysteria was popular even when it wasn't deemed necessary.
By the late 1920's,
vibrators were not being used as much by doctors and before long cheaper models
were coming on the market advertised as devices for relaxation. In the
1920's porn movies began showing sex scenes involving vibrators although this
didn't shine all that a positive light on vibrators.
By the 1960's
vibrators were making a come back advertised as massagers and could be bought
from any popular catalog.
By the 1990's, with
the invention for the internet, the sex toys industry grew by leaps and bounds
and is still growing.
